Prosthodontics & Implants
Dentures are removable appliances that can replace missing teeth and help restore your smile. If you’ve lost all of your natural teeth, whether from gum disease, tooth decay or injury, replacing missing teeth will benefit your appearance and your health.
When you lose all of your teeth, facial muscles can sag, making you look older. Dentures can help fill out the appearance of your face and profile. They can be made to closely resemble your natural teeth so that your appearance does not change much. Dentures may even improve the look of your smile.
How Does It Work
Dentures are replacements for missing teeth that can be taken out and put back into your mouth. While dentures take some getting used to, today’s dentures are natural looking and more comfortable than ever.
With full dentures, a flesh-colored acrylic base fits over your gums. The base of the upper denture covers the palate (the roof of your mouth), while that of the lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to accommodate your tongue. Dentures will make it easier to eat and speak better than you could without teeth — things that people often take for granted.
How Do I Get Started?
Our dentist will remove teeth that need to be extracted in order for proper fitting of dentures. Your gums will be given time to heal post-extraction – healing period is usually 6 – 8 weeks.
On your next visit (after your gums has heal), our dentist will take a preliminary imprint of your oral tissues, a final detailed imprint, and then a master cast model of your mouth.
Our dentist and you will choose from a range of tooth shapes, sizes, and colors that accurately fit your face and mouth. If you can, have a family member or friend help you choose your new teeth. Once you and your dentist are pleased with the shape, size and color of your teeth, your final dentures can then be completed.
When your custom-made dentures are ready, you will try it on and our dentist will make any adjustments to ensure a proper fit. With proper care, a set of dentures can last from 5 to 10 years. It’s normal for the shape of your mouth to change, when this happens, dentist will need to rebase or reline to ensure a proper fit.
